A study was undertaken to determine the optimal sperm concentration and the minimal number of spermatozoa for the in vitro fertilization of rat eggs from mature and from immature animals. The optimal sperm concentration was found to be between .5 and 1.5 million/m1 in an experiment using eggs recovered from either mature or immature females and between .16 and .51 million in another experiment using eggs from immature animals. Eggs from immature rats were easier to fertilize in vitro than those from mature rats. The minimal number of spermatozoa necessary for in vitro fertilization of an individual rat egg was 3000-6000 under the conditions used.
