IUD-bearing hamsters were studied to see if a delay in ovulation or LH (luteinizing hormone) discharge could be demonstrated. At the time of peak LH levels in controls IUD hamsters HL levels were also significantly (p<.05) elevated but reached only 7% of control levels. The IUD animals showed an LH peak 2 hours later when control levels were dropping. Progesterone levels were significantly (p<.05) higher in control animals at 16.30 to 17.15 hours with no rise in IUD animals. There was no significant difference in the number of ova shed between the 2 groups. The 2-hour delay in the LH surge in IUD animals was prevented by a single injection of 500 mcg progesterone. The advanced LH peak 4-fold higher than in the control animals.
