18 gilts were fed daily 100 mg ICI 33828 an estrus synchrony drug beginning on Day 18 of the estrus cycle in the late follicular phase (Day 1 was estrus) 67 percent showed estrus while all controls showed estrus. Gilts were killed 2 4 or 6 days after estrus if it occurred or 10 days after first ICI 33828 treatment if no estrus was shown. From animals with corpora lutea (94 percent of controls and 25 percent of treated gilts mean CL per gilt: 11.3 and 7.7 respectively) there was a 72 percent ova recovery and from animals showing estrus and no CL no ova were recovered; thus treated gilts showed a lower rate of ovulation. Gilts inhibited from both estrus and ovulation had no follicles over 7 mm in diameter. Pituitary LH and FSH was greater (P less than .01) in treated gilts than in controls. Ovulating treated gilts generally had lower LH and FSH levels than suppressed gilts. Although ICI-33828 apparently blocked LH release and thus the plasma LH surge necessary for ovulation follicular fluid weight and number of follicles of 7 to 10 mm in treated gilts was significatly (P less than .05) greater than in controls indicating no block to FSH synthesis. While follicular fluid weight of controls but not treated gilts increased from Day 4 to Day 6 the absolute value of follicular weight in treated animals remained greater and the number of follicles smaller than 4mm and 4 to 7 mm increased to equal distribution in controls on Day 6.
