According to the prevailing concept, biosynthesis of anthocyanins and flavones in higher plants resides in a concurrence of two different biochemical pathways'' leading to the formation of precursors for Aand B-rings in anthocyanins; the one being a poly-/3-keto-acid intermediate produced by head-to-tail condensation of acetate units23', and the other being certain C9-intermediate formed through the shikimicprephenic acid route as already pointed out by Davis4 5' . Recently, some works on anthocyanin production have shown that in corn endosperm the pigmentation is promoted by some amino acids such as aspartic acid and cysteine, while it is suppressed by riboflavine and methionine to some extent6', showing an apparent agreement with a previous view presented by Thimann et al.7 '8 , 9' using a small floating plant, Spirodela oligorrhiza. Based on the preliminary analyses of various components in radish (Raphanus sativus) and turnip (Brassica rapa)10', attempt has been made by the present authors to disclose the biosynthetic relationship between anthocyanin (acylated triglucoside of pelargonidin"2)) and some of the amino acids in these plants. As described in the preceding paper13', the administration of '4C-labeled amino acids to the seedlings has proved that not only phenylalanine but also leucine and valine are efficiently utilized in the biosynthesis of anthocyanin skeleton. While it has been established that phenylalanine serves as an excellent precursor for the formation of the B-ring of flavonoids in general, the role of other amino acids still remains to be investigated. The present paper deals with this problem by the use of 14C-labeled leucine in order to clarify the distribution of radioactivity within the molecule of anthocyanin itself as well as in a number of related compounds appearing in radish seedlings.
