Composition of photosynthetic pigments has been regarded as one of the important characters for phylogenetical classification of plants. Tilden" emphasized that there exist close correlations between the pigment composition and morphological characteristics. Kimura3 4', Silva5', Allen, Dougherty and McLaughlin6' used composition of chlorophylls as a phylogenetical marker to divide plant kingdom into the phyla. Physical and chemical properties of phycoerythrins have been extensively investigated by many workers, O'hEocha7 "', Smith'', Allen et al.°, O'hEocha and Raftery10', and Haxo and Fork"'. According to their absorption characteristics and their algal origin, the names of C-, Rand Bphycoerythrins were proposed (Svedberg and Katsurai"', Haxo and Blinks"). C-phycoerythrin showed one peak at the visible region of the absorption spectrum, B-phycoerythrin two and R-phycoerythrin three. It is the very purpose of the present studies to investigate the distribution of the three types of phycoerythrins among various taxonomical groups in Rhodophyceae.
