When a strain of yeast is inoculated in a medium containing an inhibiting concentration of copper salt, apparent growth of copper resistant cells begins after a period of growth inhibition"2~, and a copper resistance thus obtained in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is inherited in a Mendelian way3~ . On the other hand, there are in Carbondale breeding stock some strains which are copper resistant without being previously exposed to inhibiting concentrations of copper. Their resistance is also genecontrolled4> . It has been shown that, in the copper resistant strain of the former type, cells accumulate much copper when cultured with copper-containing mediums .6, , owing, at least partly, to high hydrogen sulfide production7~ . But this does not seem to be the case with the latter type of resistant strains. In the present work, the two categories of copper resistant strains are compared for some characters which are thought to have close connection with their resistance mechanisms.
