Effects of inorganic nitrogen compounds on the growth of isolated young embryos were studied in orchids by Spoerl° and in Oryza by Amemiya et al.2' Paris et al.3' reported that glutamine was a suitable nitrogen source for embryo growth of Datura stranonium. Sanders and Burkholder4' found that some mixtures of various amino acids promoted embryo growth of D. stramonium. Norstog5' observed that amino acids did not promote the growth of young embryos of Hordeum vulgare. Ri jven° found that glutamine was more favorable for the growth of Capsella embryos than the complete mixture of amino acids. Some reports concerning the effect of nitrogen compounds on the growth of excised embryos are conflicting. The nutritive value of different nitrogen sources seems to vary according to the plant species. More and detailed investigations are desirable.
