Sumpor (CAS registracijski broj: 7704-34-9, relativna molekulska masa 32,06) je kemijski element 16. skupine periodnog sustava, koji ima četiri stabilna izotopa (32S, 33S, 34S i 36S) među kojima je 32S najzastupljeniji (95 % ukupnog sumpora na Zemlji).1–3 Sumpor nije element obilno zastupljen u Zemljinoj kori, jer ga ima svega 260 ppm.3,4 Kemijski je reaktivan element,4,5 zbog čega se nalazi u mnogobrojnim anorganskim i organskim spojevim u različitim oksidacijskim stanjima (−II, II, IV ili VI).6
