In this paper, the most used and popular cryptographic algorithms are investigated in detail, and compared in terms of security and total run time duration. Throughout history, different approaches have been practiced in order to encrypt confidential data, such as transposition and substitution. In modern cryptography, more advanced algorithms were designed, categorized as symmetric and asymmetric ciphers, and protocols. In this study, among symmetric algorithms, Data Encryption Standard (DES) and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) are studied, and among asymmetric algorithms, RSA is analyzed as a final step. Afterwards, they are compared in terms of performance and efficiency when implemented in MATLAB. Lastly, it is discussed about encryption issues in traffic control systems in smart cities, and the possible adaptation of the cryptographic algorithms mentioned above in those systems.
