This paper is mainly concerned with the presentation of the diffuse X-ray scattering of homogeneous potassium-rich low- and high-temperature sanidines (K, Na)AlSi 3 O 8 . Single crystal X-ray photographs were obtained with the Laue method, the monochromatic Laue technique and, for comparison with literature data, with the precession method. The monochromatic Laue photographs display an unexpectedly complex diffuse scattering pattern. The precession photographs show elongated diffuse streaks parallel and perpendicular to  b*  which are similar to those of the orthoclases described in the literature. There the diffuse streaks are interpreted to be caused by ordering modulations or submicroscopic twin textures which develop during the sanidine-microcline phase transition. Such a microtexture model is not justified for homogeneous sanidines. It is suggested that the diffuse scattering of the sanidines arises from the aluminosilicate framework which is statically distorted by the different sizes of the AlO 4  and SiO 4  tetrahedra.
