Salts of potassium cations, complexed either by (18-crown-6) or (2.2.2 cryptand) with centrosymmetric I 3  ⊖  anions are crystallized and their structures recorded at 200 K: The crown ether solvated salt [C 12 H 24 O 6 K ⊕  I 3  ⊖ ] ( 1 , monoclinic,  Cc ,  Z  = 4,  a  = 840.3(1) pm,  b  = 1507.4(2) pm,  c  = 1739.8(2) pm,  β  = 98.75(1)°,  R  = 0.0318) is a solvent-free contact ion pair, whereas the cryptand-complexed salt, [C 18 H 36 O 6 N 2 K ⊕ ] (C 4 H 9 OH) 0.5 [I 3  ⊖ ] ( 2 , monoclinic,  P 2/ n ,  Z  = 4,  a  = 1110.9(2) pm,  b  = 1439.2(2) pm,  c  = 1953.1(4) pm,  β  = 93.73(1)°,  R  = 0.0556) contains disordered butanol solvent molecules and separated I 3  ⊖  anions.
