The crystal structure of SrCr 9 Ga 3 O 19  has been refined in space group  P 6 3 / mmc  with an  R -value of 0.043 ( R w   = 0.038). The lattice parameters are  a  = 5.7960(3) Å and  c  = 22.658(2) Å,  Z  = 2. Gallium is located on tetrahedral and trigonal bipyramidal sites of the magnetoplumbite structure type. All chromium ions occupy octahedral sites. In pairs of face-sharing octahedra the interatomic Cr 3+  –Cr 3+  distance of 2.634(4) Å is comparable to that in corundum type Cr 2 O 3  with Cr 3+  –Cr 3+  = 2.650(1) Å. These short metal–metal separations suggest cation–cation interactions in both oxides. The displacement of Ga 3+  from the center of the adjacent trigonal bipyramid is reduced from 0.16 Å in SrGa 12 O 19  to 0.13 Å in SrCr 9 Ga 3 O 19 .
