The crystal and molecular structure of (E)-diphenyl-3-oxo-butenylphosphine oxide C 16 H 15 )O 2 P has been determined by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group  P 2 1 / c  with unit cell parameters  a  = 5.385(4),  b  = 16.54(2),  c  = 15.88(1) Å,  β  = 93.08(1)°, and  Z  = 4. X-ray data collected on a CAD-4 diffractometer with Mo Kα  radiation at 111 K. Least-squares refinement based on 2218 observed reflections with intensities  I  &gt; 2 σ ( I ) led to a final  R  factor 0.067 ( R w   = 0.072). Both phenyl rings are disordered and two different positions of the respective atoms were found. Disordered atoms were refined anisotropically with fixed site occupation factors equal to 0.5. The configuration at the double bond is  E . The phosphoryl bond is coplanar with the 3-oxo-butenyl fragment of the molecule.
