The structure of K 3.86 Na 5.30 H 3 O 0.84  + Fe 6  3+ O 2 (SO 4 ) 12  · 17.08 H 2 O was solved by direct methods and isotropically refined to a final  R  = 0.10 for 889 independent reflexions. Characteristic crystal data are: trigonal, space group  P [unk],  Z  = 1,  D m   = 2.464,  D x   = 2.464 g cm −3  and unit-cell parameters:  a  =  b  = 9.611(3),  c  = 17.830(15) Å. The structure consists of big clusters of the composition [Fe 6  3+ O 2 (SO 4 ) 12  · 6 H 2 O] 4−  connected in couples by means of Na and K, to form sandwich sheets. A disordered layer built up by H 3 O +  and Na +  cations is situated between them. There is a precise relation between the composition of this layer and the chemistry of the sandwich sheet, which appears to control the stability of the structure.
