The crystal structure of Ba 9 Ge 23 O 53 (OH) 4  has been determined at 300°K. Single crystals of this material were obtained at pressures of 4.0 – 6.0 GPa and temperatures of 750° – 1100°C. A previous report has incorrectly identified this material as “Ba 2 Ge 5 O 12 ”. The crystals belong to the hexagonal system with  a  = 11.6784(12),  c  = 19.2545(13) Å, space group  P 6 3  cm ,  Z  = 2. Calculated density is 5.58 gcm −3 . Of the 57 anion sites, the three O(7) sites are occupied by OH. A random partial occupancy by OH and O of the three O(4) anion sites was assumed (O/OH = 2/1). Of twenty three Ge atoms, twelve are tetrahedrally 4-fold, three are tetragonal pyramidally 5-fold, and eight are octahedrally 6-fold coordinated. Three Ba atoms are surrounded by nine, ten, eleven anions, respectively. There are Ge 3 O 10  and Ge 3 (O/OH) 11  rings and a quarter of the unit cell (1/4  c ) is close to the structure of BaGe 4 O 9 .
