The redetermination of the crystal structure of the title compound, Ni(S 2 COEt) 2 , using contemporary methods is reported. The crystals are orthorhombic,  Pbca ,  a  = 7.566(1),  b  = 7,220(2),  c  = 20.852(6) Å and  Z  = 4. The structure was refined by a full-matrix least-squares method;  R  0.033 and  R w   0.037 for 632 reflections with  I  ⩾ 3  σ ( I ). The immediate environment of the nickel atom is comprised of two chelating xanthate ligands [average Ni – S 2.211(2) Å] in the expected square planar array. Due to weak intermolecular interactions there are as well two longer nickel to sulphur distances at 3.448(2) which lie close to the normal of the NiS 4  plane. The interatomic parameters for the ethylxanthate ligand are consistent with those obtained for the triclinic modification and other comparable systems but differ significantly from those of the previous structure determination.
