β -Alanine copper (II) chloride, [(NH 3 CH 2 CH 2 COO) 2 Cu 2 Cl 4 ] crystallizes in a bi-molecular monoclinic unit cell of dimensions  a  = 7.960(1),  b  = 12.249(2),  c  = 6.875(1) Å and  β  = 94.10(1)°, space group  P 2 1 / c . The density is  d  calc  = 2.219 g cm −3 ,  d  exp  = 2.23 g cm −3 . The intensity data were collected using a CAD-4 diffractometer with Mo Kα  radiation. The crystal structure of this compound has been solved making use of a Patterson synthesis and difference Fourier calculations and refined to an  R -value of 0.044 with 1121 reflections. Copper is coordinated to four chlorines and two oxygens of  β -alanine groups forming a distorted octahedron. The  β -alanine molecules exist in this structure as zwitterions (NH 3  + CH 2 CH 2 COO − ).
