The hexagonal rare earth aluminates REAl 11 O 18 , REMgAl 11 O 19 , and RELi 0.5 Al 11.5 O 19  were prepared by solid state reaction. The phases REA1 11 O 18  were found to exist only for RE = La, Ce, REMgAl 11 O 19  for RE = La – Gd, and RELi 0.5 Al 11.5 O 19  for RE = La – Eu. The values of  c/a  indicate REMgAl 11 O 19  and RELi 0.5 Al 11.5 O 19  to belong to the magnetoplumbite type. This may also be true for REA1 11 O 18  which was formerly assumed as a  β -alumina phase.
