As temperature increases, beryllium polyphosphate BeP 2 O 6 III undergoes a displacive transformation at 96°C from  a  = 14.062(4),  b  = 8.629(2),  c  = 7.091(1)Å,  β  = 90.80(2)°,  Z  = 8,  P 2 1 , to  a  = 9.968(4),  b  = 10.080(4),  c  = 8.692(2)Å,  Z  = 8,  C 222 1 . The crystal structure of the orthorhombic high temperature phase has been determined from 599 intensities photographically recorded at 119°C and refined to  R  = 0.113. Corner sharing [PO 4 ] tetrahedra form strongly folded chains parallel to the 8.6 Å axis with eight tetrahedra in the repeat unit. These chains are joined by [BeO 4 ] tetrahedra to give a three-dimensional framework with the same topology as silica K (keatite).
