Cu 4 SnP 10  crystallizes in the cubic space group  F [unk]3m –  2 [unk] (No. 216) with  a = 1026.7 pm and  Z  = 4 formula units. The compound belongs to the family of tetrahedral structures but with anomalous defects and is a  cF 64 structure type with 4 defects. The P[unk] polyanion with the decaphosphaadamantane structure and the four-center 2-electron cluster [SnCu 3 ] are remarkable. The main bond lengths are  d (Sn–P) = 266.5 pm;  d (Sn–Cu) = 287.3 pm; [unk](Cu–P) = 227.1 pm and  d (P–P) = 218.4 pm. The discussion of the bond lengths in terms of bond orders shows good agreement with the number of valence electrons. The [SnCu 3 ] cluster with its environment of 12 donor ligands is comparable to the tetrahedral carbonyl cluster compounds. The relationship of the anomalous defects to Parthé's tetrahedral structure description is shown.
