Single crystals of Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2  with diameters up to 25 mm and lengths of 60 mm have been grown by the Czochralski technique from a stoichiometric melt. Elastic, thermoelastic, piezoelectric, linear electrooptic, dielectric and pyroelectric properties have been measured. Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2  exhibits much smaller elastic resistances than CaO. The difference is qualitatively explained by a simple model of bond strength and number of bonds per unit volume. Piezoelectric and electrooptical coefficients possess values similar to those of quartz. A pyroelectric effect is observed about 1.5 times larger than that of tourmaline.
