The  a  and  c  axis lattice parameters of NiAs have been determined at 300°K and from accurate powder x-ray diffraction-peak intensities the observed structure factors, | F  o |, were deduced. Using the individual isotropic temperature factors the overall structure factors, | F  c |, and the core-electron amplitudes, | F  Core |, were calculated. The electron-density distribution of the outer electrons was obtained by a difference Fourier synthesis, using | F  o – F  core | as Fourier coefficients. Assuming that in the NiAs structure the arsenic atoms utilize  d  3  p  3 -hybrid orbitals to form electron deficient, directional bonds with  d  2  sp  3  orbitals from nickel, the electrical conductivity, magnetic properties and coordination symmetries are all consistent with the obtained electron-density maps.
