Die visuelle Glanzbeurteilung ist vom Abstand des Betrachters und dem Blickwinkel abhängig. Dies gilt besonders für die Beurteilung der Verlaufsstruktur von Klarlacken. Die instrumentelle Glanzmessung wird der visuellen Bewertung ähnlich, wenn das Frequenzspektrum der Welligkeiten berechnet wird. Je nach Betrachtungsabstand wird eine Verlaufsstruktur mit 0,7 mm Wellenlänge als Lichthof-Glanz, Abbildungsglanz, kurz- oder langwellige Struktur beurteilt.
