The narrative cycle reporting the struggle for succession after Vladimir’s death in 1015 consists of two textual and chronological layers. The older layer is a set of tales told by three members of the retinue, two of whom can be identified by name; these tales were recorded in the first stage of chronicling in the late 1030s. The hagiographic layer which presents Boris and Gleb as martyrs is a separate, later layer that dates to the “Nachal’nyi svod” of the 1090s.
