Procedures have been improved for the measurement of dissolved   234 Th in seawater on 20-l volume samples, using a single γ counting. The shortened  234 Th protocol can be conducted at sea for radiochemical purification. Subsequent low-level gamma counting is done at the laboratory for the determination of the  229 Th yield tracer,  234 Th, and, depending of its activity, of  228 Th. It offers an easy and fast method for  234 Th analyses. This new approach avoids time-consuming extraction and plating procedures used previously and reduces counting errors associated with multiple counting sessions.
