Source of material Cadmium(II) sulfate (0.5 mmol), 1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl)ethene (0.5 mmol) and 2,2'-oxydibenzoic acid (0.5 mmol) were placed in a 30 ml Teflon-lined stainless-steel Parr autoclave together with water (20 ml). The autoclave was heated at 393 K for a week and was subsequently cooled slowly to room temperature. The single crystals were collected, washed with deionized water and dried. Experimental details The approximate positions of the water H atoms, obtained from a difference Fourier map, were restrained to ideal configuration of the water molecule and fixed in the final stages of refinement with d(O—H) = 0.85 Å. All other H atoms were included in calculated positions, with d(C—H) = 0.93 Å and were refined in the ridingmodel approximation. Uiso(H) = 1.2 Ueq(C,O) for the H atoms. All the solvent molecules are found and checked by PLATON [1]. The symmetry was checked by PLATON ADDSYM, and no additional symmetry was found. Discussion There has been an increasing interest in the coordination chemistry of cadmium in recent years due to the recognition of its role in biological organisms [2], as well as in molecular-based materials [3]. In addition, Cd ion is a favorable and fashionable building block or connecting node, not only because it easily coordinates N/O-containing ligands, but also becausethe closed-shell d CdCd interaction can often give rise to intriguing supramolecular motifs and properties [4,5]. In the crystal structure of the title compound, the asymmetric unit contains one Cd(II) atom, one water molecule, one 2,2'-oxydibenzoate (odb) ligand and one half molecule of the 1,2di(pyridin-4-yl)ethene (dpe) with an inversion centre at the midpoint of the central C=C bond. The Cd1 site shows a seriously distorted octahedral coordination CdNO5, where the N1 atom is from dpe ligand, five O atoms from two different odb (O1, O2, O4 and O5 atoms; symmetry code i: x+1,y,z), and one water molecule, respectively. The metal centres are connected in a threedimensional fashion through the odb and dpe ligands. The Cd—O bond lengths fall in the range 2.198(2) 2.537(2) Å. O–H···O hydrogen bonding between the water molecules and the O atoms of the carboxylate groups stabilizes this assembly. Z. Kristallogr.
