Source of material The title compound was prepared by a hydrothermal method. A mixture of Ni(NO3)2.·.6H2O (0.05 mmol), 6-(5-carboxypyridin2-yl)nicotinic acid (CNA, 0.05 mmol) and water (10 ml) was stirred for 60 min in the air. The mixture was then transferred to a 23 ml Teflon-lined autoclave and kept at 413 K for 72 h under autogenous pressure. After the mixture was cooled to room temperature slowly, blue block-shaped single crystals of the title compound suitable for X-ray analysis were obtained. Discussion Hydrogen bonding and intermolecular weak interactions are main tools for design of supramolecular polymeric networks [1,2]. It has been an increasing growing field due to the intriguing network topologies and potential applications in functional materials [3,4]. The 6-(5-carboxypyridin-2-yl)nicotinate has two Oand two N-donors, which allow to construct many different kinds of interesting structures with transition metal and lanthanide complexes [5-8]. The title crystal structure consists of nickel(II) cations and 6-(5carboxypyridin-2-yl)nicotinate anions. The nickel(II) is in a distorted octahedral environment formed by two nitrogen atoms from one 6-(5-carboxypyridin-2-yl)nicotinate and four oxygen atoms from four water molecules. The molecules are connected via hydrogen bonding into one-dimensional chain [O7 H6W···O4, d(O7···O4) = 2.711 Å, "O–H···O = 173.02°]. Adjacent 1D chains are linked into an infinite two-dimensional network structure through additional O–H···O interactions between the carboxylic O H and neighboring water molecule [O2–H2W···O5, d(O2···O5) = 2.768 Å, "O–H···O = 168.64 ; O6–H4W···O3, d(O6···O3) = 2.778 Å, "O–H···O = 158.72°]. The adjacent layers are tied by the hydrogen bonds O6–H3W···O1, d(O6···O1) = 3.223 Å, "O–H···O = 177.46°; O7–H5W···O2, d(O7···O2) = 2.786 Å, "O–H···O = 161.28°, resulting in the three-dimensional supermolecular structure.
