The beginnings of high-performance applications in motor vehicle development date back some 25 years. Today, virtual development has become a permanent feature of the vehicle development process. Applications with high computation time requirements, such as aerodynamics, crash safety or the combustion process require the use of high performance computers. Increasing requirements placed on motor vehicles, especially with regard to safety, lightweight construction and emissions, taking into account economic, market and competitive factors, have resulted in the increasing use of HPC applications. Currently, it can be observed that HPC requirements are doubling every 14 to 16 months. In addition to conventional structural mechanics, growth drivers here include new material and joining technologies, fluid dynamics applications, as well as robustness evaluations, optimisation processes and multi-disciplinary simulations.
