After summarizing the most important considerations in designing a communication oriented software system, the implementation of such a system is demonstrated, using the Siemens Telecommunication System 4004 as example. The chosen architecture allows easy adaption of the system to complex configurations and expansion of the system for the support of new, and even presently not foreseeable line control procedures, terminals etc. Among other features special attention is given to a powerful, generalized and easy to handle interface between the especially communication oriented components and that for the remaining centralized functions, that is introduced in this system. This provides great freedom in implementing the communication oriented components.
