Objective: to size the nursing staff of a surgical center and compare it to the actual picture. Methods: cross-sectional documental research. The data were collected between February and April of 2017, referring to the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the patients; and surgical size according to the number of hours of nursing in the surgical center of the sample (n=1097) of elective surgical procedures (n = 1006) and functional sites in emergency operations (n=45). Results: a descriptive statistical analysis was carried out, using equations of the personnel size in a surgical center, according to Federal Nursing Council Resolution 543/2017. The dimensioned table consisted of 16 professionals for the uninterrupted care in the surgical center, and the actual picture consisted of 26 professionals. Conclusion: there is a surplus of technical professionals and nurses' deficit in the unit. Descriptors: Personnel downsizing; Surgicenters; Personnel management; Workload; Perioperative
