ᴅ-(-)-ribose was subjected to oxidation with equimolar amounts of H 2 O 2 /Fe 2+  and 13-hydro-peroxy-9-cis-11-trans-octadecadienoic acid/Fe 2+ . Smaller carbohydrates, carbonyl compounds, hydroxy acids and polyols were produced. Identification of carbonyl compounds was achieved by trapping with pentafluorobenzylhydroxylamine hydrochloride (PFBHA-HCl). All products were identified by GC/MS after derivatization with N-methyl-N-trimethylsilyl-trifluoroacetamide (MSTFA). The reactions were repeated with ᴅ-[ 13 C 1 ]-ribose in order to reveal the mechanism of oxidation. A possible reaction pathway is outlined starting by removal of hydrogens from C-H bonds.
