The effect of extracellularly applied octopamine (10 -5 mol/l) on the receptor potential of the Limulus ventral photoreceptor was studied. Octopamine increases the sensitivity of the photoreceptor in the light-adapted state more than in the dark-adapted state. Extracellular application of phentolamine (10 -5 mol/l) has an opposite, antagonizing effect. The octopamine effect, though reproducible in the individual experiment, varies greatly from preparation to preparation.
