Cotyledons isolated from maturing seeds of Juglans regia incorporate supplied [ 15 N]-ammonia into serotonin (5-HT). A  15 N incorporation of about 9% into the indolic nitrogen of 5-HT is detectable by gas chromatographymass spectrometry following isolation of 5-HT by preparative HPLC. This  15 N incorporation supports the hypothesis that biosynthesis and accum ulation of 5-HT play a role in ammonia detoxification in maturing walnut seeds
