The peritrophic membrane of Daphnia pulex, Daphnia magna, and Leptestheria dahalacensis consists of arbitrarily or hexagonal arranged fibrils. Peritrophic membranes of L. dahalacensis show in addition an orthogonal orientation. The development of these patterns by “self assembly”-processes can be excluded.
