The reaction of the acetonide protected derivative of tartaric acid, DIMTH(OH) 2  (1) (1,6-didesoxy- 3,4-O-isopropylidene-2,5-di-C-methyl-threo-hexitol), with SOCl 2 /NEt 2  does not lead to the expected dichlorinated species 2, but affords the cyclic sulfite DIMTH(SO 3 ) (3) ((1R, 7R)-9,9-dimethyl-4-oxide-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-thia-3,5,8,10-tetraoxabicyclo-[5,3,0] decane) as indicated by X-ray structural analysis.
