The crystal structure of Rb 3 NbO 8  (SG I4̅2m, Nr. 121) has been determined on single crystals to a final R = 0.041. The structure is isotypic to the K 3 CrO 8  type. Vibrational spectra of the title compound have been recorded on powdered samples and are discussed with respect to the internal vibrations of the peroxo-group and the dodecahedral NbO 8  3-  ion. The stretching vibrations of the O 2  2-  groups are found at 838 (Raman) and 813 cm - 1 (IR). A factor group analysis for the K 3 CrO 8  type is given.
