The structure of the compounds formed upon reacting Fe(Pr i  2 P(CH 2 ) n PPr i  2 )Cl 2  (n = 1-3) and active-Mg with acyclic and cyclic 1,3-, 1,4- and 1,5-dienes depends upon the nature of the diene and upon the length of the methylene-chain bridging the two P-atoms of the bidentate ligand. For example, isoprene reacts to give either (η 4 -isoprene) 2 FePPr i  2 C 2 H 4 PPr i  2  or (η 4 -isoprene)Fe(Pr i  2 PC 3 H 6 PPr i  2 ) while the products of the reaction with 1,5-hexadiene are (η 5 -1-methylpentadienyl)Fe(Pr i  2 PC 2 H 4 PPr i  2 )H or (η 2 ,η 2 -1,5-hexadiene)Fe(Pr i  2 PC 3 H 6 PPr i  2 ). The crystal structures of the last two compounds have been established by X-ray diffraction. The penultimate species catalyses the linear dimerization of 1,5-hexadiene.
