η 3 -Phosphinoketene complexes of tungsten Cp(CO)ClW [η 3 -P(Ph 2 )-C(R)=C=O] (R=Me, Ph) react with hydrogen chloride under protonation of the ketene oxygen atom converting the ketene into a new cyclobutenol system. The products have been characterized by  1 H,  13 C,  31 P NMR. IR and mass spectra. 1-Carbonyl-1,1-dichloro-1-(η 5 -cyclopentadienyl)-2,2-di-phenyl-3-methyl-1-wolframa-2-phospha-3-buten-4-ol crystallized in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /n with a = 9.046(2), b = 7.369(1), c = 30.266(2) Å, β = 96.63(3)° and Z = 4.
