PF 3  is obtained in high purity by reacting PCl 3  with Me 3 SnF. Alternative fluorinating reagents for this reaction are Ph 3 SnF and (i-C 4 H 9 ) 3 SnF. The reaction with the isobutyl derivative is less complicated since the resulting chloride is a liquid in contrast to Ph 3 SnCl being a solid. PCl 5 , MeCOCl, SiCl 4 , Me 3 SiCl, and SOCl 2  react with Me 3 SnF to give also the corresponding fluorides. The resulting chlorides are easily converted again to the fluorides. A quantitative recycling of the fluorinating reagent is therefore achieved.
