The alkyne containing halfsandwich complexes [C 5 H 5 (P(OCH 3 )3) 2 Fe(HC ≡ CC 6 H 5 )]PF 6  (IIIa) and [C 5 H 5 (P(OCH 3 ) 3 ) 2 Fe(CH 3 O 2 CC = CCO 2 CH 3 )]PF 6  (IIIb) are accessible by thermal acetonitrile substitution from [C 5 H 5 (P(OCH 3 ) 3 ) 2 Fe(NCCH 3 )]PF 6  (I) in the presence of the alkyne. Upon standing in solution, IIIa isomerizes to give the isomeric phenylvinylidene complex [C 5 H 5 (P(OCH 3 ) 3 ) 2 Fe(C=C(C 6 H 5 )H)]PF 6  (IV). The spectroscopic data are presented together with a discussion of the X-ray structure determinations of IIIb and IV.
