Heating a mixture (2:1) of the tetrabutylammonium salts (TBA) 2 [PtBr6] and (TBA) 2 [PtBr4] with trifluoroacetic acid leads to the mixed valence dodecabromotriplatinate(IV,II,IV) (TBA) 2 [Pt 3 Br 12 ]. The X-ray structure determination of (Ph 3 P=N=PPh 3 )2[Pt 3 Br 12 ] · 2 CH 2 Cl 2  (triclinic, PĪ, Z = 1) shows trinuclear groups with nearly D2h symmetry for the anions, formed of two PtBr 6  octahedra and one planar PtBr 4  group sharing edges. Using the structural data a normal coordinate analysis based on a general valence force field for [Pt 3 Br 12 ] 2 - has been performed, which gives good agreement of the calculated frequencies with the bands observed in the IR and Raman spectra.
