Maleic anhydride (MA) was polymerized by a free radical mechanism (PMA) and transformed into the poly-acid and its alkali salts, the ionic conductivities of which were determined. Blends of the lithium salt with propylene carbonate (PC), low molecular weight poly(ethyleneglycol) (PEG), and some crown ethers show improved conductivities. Alkali alcoholates and alcohols react with PMA to form linear poly(methylesters), comb-shaped polymers with methoxy poly(ethyleneoxide) pendants, and PEG cross-linked structures. Alkalisalt/ester copolymers as well as LiClO 4  podand complexes were studied. Among these, the viscous comb-shaped polymers show the highest conductivities, when having a Li : O ratio of 1:2.7, i.e. x = 10 -5 S/cm at 20°C and 4 · 10 -3 S/cm at 80°C.
