Single crystals of Zn 4 Fe II  5 (PO 4 ) 6  ∙ 4H 2 O were grown by hydrothermal treatment of phosphophyllite (Zn 2 Fe(PO 4 ) 2  ∙ 4H 2 O) in H 2 O at 180 °C. The crystal structure (tricl., P1̄; a = 651.6(4) pm, b = 902.7(4) pm, c = 995.4(4) pm, α = 69.01(5)°, β = 78.19(5)°, γ = 75.33(5)°; Z = 1) can be derived from the Zn 2 (Zn 1-x Fe x )Fe III (PO 4 ) 3  ∙ 2H 2 O structure by reduction of Fe III  to Fe II  and by filling a "structure hole" with an additional Fe II .
