The complexes Ph 2 SeAuCl (green) and Ph 2 SeAuCl 3  (brown) are prepared by direct reaction between the diphenylselenide ligand and the corresponding gold chloride. The crystal structures confirm the presence of monomeric, linear (Au I ) or square planar (Au III ) coordinated complexes with bond lengths A u(I)-Se 2.378(1), Au(III)-Se 2.445(1) Å. Short non-bonded contacts Au(I) ··· Au(I) and Au(III) ··· Cl are observed.
