The crystal structure of Na 10 Ga 6 Sn 3  (a = 1457.6(3), c = 897.6(2) pm, P4 2 /mnm, Z = 4) contains Ga 12  icosahedra, which are connected by four of their eight exo-bound Sn atoms to form anionic chains  1  ∞ [Ga 12 Sn 4 Sn 4/2 ] 20- . The structure is discussed on the basis of the Zintl concept and Wade’s rules.
