Lithium triphenylsilyl-phenylphosphide (3), X = SiPh 3  , reacts with ketones to give tetraphenyl-phospholanes (6). In an initial step a phosphaalkene 5 is formed, which then adds three more phenylphosphinidene units. This second step can be performed independently, and the PhP units can be furnished by pentaphenylcyclopentaphosphane (1) if the reaction is catalyzed by lithium triphenylstannide (2), X = SnPh 3 .
