(p-CH 3 C 6 H 4 ) 4 Bi 2  is obtained from ditolylbismuth bromide with sodium in liquid ammonia. The compound reacts with selenium, sulfur or p-benzoquinone with increasing rate to the corresponding (R 2 Bi) 2 E-derivatives (E = S, Se, 1,4-C 6 H 4 O 2 ). Reactions of the dibismuthane with equimolar amounts of diphenyl dichalcogenides produce phenylchalcogenobismuthanes of the general formula (p-CH 3 C 6 H 4 )2BiEC 6 H 5  (E - S, Se, Te).
