Aluminium trichloride forms a 1:1 addition product with tetramethylurea (1) the structure of which has been determined by X-ray methods. Tetramethylurea is bound to the AlCl 3  unit via its oxygen atom; consequently, a lengthening of the CO bond is observed. The (CH 3 ) 2 N units are less twisted relative to the OCN 2  plane than in the free ligand.
