The title compounds and the trinitro methanide salts with PPh 4  ⊕  and N-methyl pyridinium cations are prepared from K[C(NO 2 ) 3 ] and the chlorides of the organic cations in aqueous solution. They form thermally stable, yellow crystalline solids. The IR spectra are reported. The crystal structures of [(CH 3 )P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 ][C(NO 2 ) 3 ] (2) and [(ICH 2 )P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 ][C(NO 2 ) 3 ] (3) are determined by the aid of X-ray methods.
