The new compound Ba 5 (GaS 4 ) 2  crystallizes in the orthorhombic system (space group: Cmca) with lattice constants a = 2249.4(12) pm, b = 1214.6(8) pm, c = 1188.7(8) pm. In the structure there are isolated GaS 4  5-  -tetrahedra. According to stoichiometry and structure this compound belongs to the complex salts, and is the first othiogallate(III).
